Fleas and Ticks

Sep 20, 2018

It has been a long, hot summer here in Eastern NC. With the hot weather comes our little enemies- fleas and ticks. Although it is important to have your pet on flea/tick prevention year-round, it is especially important as the temperatures get warmer. Fleas can wreak havoc on the skin, causing skin infections and flaring up allergic disease. They can even carry infectious diseases as well. Fleas are also very difficult to get rid of once they are a problem in your house. If you see 1 flea on your dog or cat, there are hundreds more that you cannot see. Think of your dog or cat as a pepper shaker, leaving tiny baby fleas all over your house…ick!! Ticks are also very dangerous to both dogs and cats. Ticks carry diseases like Lyme disease, Erhlichosis, Anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever- all of which can occur here in eastern NC.

The good news is that there are many types of flea and tick prevention for both dogs and cats. Some are even conveniently combined with heartworm prevention. Please come by or give us a call to discuss the best heartworm/flea/tick prevention options for your pets.

Remember, some tick preventatives are EXTREMELY toxic to cats. Please be sure that your prevention is labeled for cats before using it as the wrong choice can be fatal!
