Once a week, Dr. Kuhn is the leader of a group of volunteers who train and socialize animals at the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina to help make them more adoptable. She is also involved with the New Leash on Life Program at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, NC, where dogs are placed with inmate trainers in the prison. The inmates teach basic obedience, house training, and socialization through different techniques. All dogs used in this program come from the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina.
Dr. Kuhn volunteers her time to work with high school students at The Oakwood School and students at other local high schools. She encourages older teens, including East Carolina University students to volunteer at the clinic. Dr. Kuhn received an honor by the Hire a Pirate Program from ECU for employing their students on a continuing basis.
The Shackleford Horse Foundation works in conjunction with the National Park Service to dart and remove wild horses from Shackleford Island, NC, to maintain the health of the herd. All horses are placed in good homes. Dr. Kuhn is the lead veterinarian responsible for handling all the darting and treatment of any horses on the island.
